Singapore sets nearly S$70,000 in support per child

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced a new SG Child Support Package at the National Day Rally on Aug. 23, giving every Singaporean child almost S$70,000 in direct support from birth to age 17. The scheme consolidates and replaces the Baby Bonus Scheme and Large Families Scheme, and provides the same level of support regardless of birth order. Its components include a S$10,000 Baby Gift, S$2,000 a year for each child from age 1 to 16, subsidies intended to lower government-supported full-day childcare fees to S$150 a month, and a S$10,000 post-secondary education contribution. The measures follow Singapore’s total fertility rate falling to a record-low 0.87 last year, while the country is expected to have about one in five residents aged 65 or older this year. Wong also announced expanded childcare leave of eight, 10 or 12 days per parent a year for one, two or three or more Singaporean children up to age 12, compared with current entitlements that vary by age and do not increase with the number of children. Housing measures include higher income ceilings for BTO flats, executive condominiums and eligible singles, plus an additional ballot chance per Singaporean child for first-timer families with or expecting children from February 2027. Beyond family policy, Wong said Singapore would remain open to foreign manpower while keeping citizens as the majority and broadly maintaining the current ethnic balance. He also announced looser rules for dialect content on paid television and cinema screenings, and said the government is studying undersea tunnels to Pulau Tekong and a plan to merge Semakau, Bukom, Pulau Sudong and nearby islands for industrial, power and other long-term needs.

India’s Doval due in Beijing for border talks

In India, Kerala excise officials said four people were arrested in two linked operations involving 279.3 grams of MDMA allegedly brought from Delhi using women as carriers. Pakistani police reported separate arrests in Rawalpindi and Gujrat involving hashish and heroin seizures. Police in Miri, Malaysia, said a weekend crime-prevention operation led to the arrest of one woman for alleged drug abuse. In Bali, Indonesia, police said they arrested a 50-year-old man identified as IWP in Pemogan, Denpasar, and seized suspected shabu, ecstasy pills, cash, scales, sealing tools, smoking equipment and phones.

Malaysian court remands eight over Linkedua road closure

Alibaba raises $10.2 billion for AI expansion

Shein launched bookbuilding Monday for a Hong Kong initial public offering, seeking to raise up to HK$13.86 billion, or about $1.77 billion, by selling about 280 million shares at HK$47.60 to HK$49.50 each. At the top of the range, the China-founded, Singapore-headquartered fast-fashion retailer would be valued at about $26.8 billion to $27 billion. The planned listing follows failed efforts to list in New York and London. Beijing approved the Hong Kong IPO last month. The valuation is about 70% below Shein’s 2022 private-market peak of $98.2 billion and below its $64 billion valuation in 2023 and April 2024. Shein said it will announce the final offer price on August 31, with trading scheduled to begin on September 1.

Profit pressure: Shein reported $2.06 billion in net profit for 2025 but later posted a $99 million quarterly loss after the United States ended an import-duty exemption for small packages.

Indian rescuers search for 22 after ship sinks

India’s Coast Guard and Navy continued searching the Bay of Bengal after the Panama-flagged bulk carrier MV Ocean Winner sank about 240 nautical miles off the Odisha coast, leaving 22 of 24 crew members missing. The crew included 20 Chinese nationals, three Myanmar nationals and one Bangladeshi national; the two rescued seafarers were identified as Chinese nationals. The vessel had departed Paradip Port carrying iron ore. Sources gave different destinations: MarineTraffic listed Singapore, while India’s shipping minister Sarbananda Sonowal and an initial Maritime Administration report described the cargo as bound for China. Officials said the cause of the sinking was not immediately known. Survivors told India’s Maritime Administration director general Shyam Jagannathan that the ship developed a list and sank within eight minutes, forcing the crew to abandon ship.

Beijing robot games draw 2,056 humanoid competitors

The second World Humanoid Robot Games opened at Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval on Aug. 22 and runs through Aug. 26, with 666 teams from 16 countries and 2,056 humanoid robots competing in 51 categories and 1,301 matches. The event includes 30 sports competitions and 21 scenario-based contests in simulated factories, restaurants, offices, hotels, homes, logistics sites and emergency settings. Chinese humanoid robots drew attention on the opening weekend after Tiangong Ultra completed a 100-meter preliminary heat in 9.39 seconds, faster than Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second human world record from 2009, while another robot, Lightning, reportedly ran 9.32 seconds in a preparatory test. A Tiangong model later clocked 38.15 seconds in the 400 meters, faster than the 43.03-second human record, though sources noted the robot times are not directly comparable with official human athletics records because the events used different conditions and rules.
