Spanish government proposes Juan José Ganuza as CNMC president

Spain’s Cabinet proposed economist Juan José Ganuza to head the National Commission for Markets and Competition, or CNMC, replacing Cani Fernández after her term expired June 17 and left her in the post on an interim basis. Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo made the proposal, which must go through the Congress of Deputies before the Cabinet can make the appointment by royal decree. The government also proposed Carmen Balsa, Marina Echebarría and Joan Capdevila as new CNMC councillors, filling pending board posts at the Spanish competition and markets regulator. ABC, El Mundo, La Voz de Galicia and Libertad Digital reported links between the proposed councillors and the governing Socialists or parliamentary partners Sumar and ERC. If approved, Ganuza would serve a six-year term, while Spain’s next general election must be held no later than summer 2027. Ganuza is a professor of economics and business at Pompeu Fabra University, director of markets, regulation and competition at Funcas, and a specialist in competition policy, market regulation, digital economy and public procurement.

Alibaba sues Pentagon over Chinese military blacklist

Alibaba filed a federal lawsuit in San Jose, California, seeking removal from a Pentagon list that designates the Chinese e-commerce and cloud-computing group as linked to China’s military. The Pentagon added Alibaba to the 1260H list after saying the company was a “military-civil fusion contributor to the Chinese defense industrial base” through ties to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and an indirect affiliation with China’s state asset regulator, SASAC. Australia core inflation rise lifts rate-hike risk

ECB officials warn eurozone inflation may stay high

U.S. factory PMI rises as jobs fall sharply

Spanish business group CEOE advances presidential election process

The UK formally left the EU on January 31, 2020, and its post-Brexit trading arrangements took full effect on January 1, 2021. Economic assessments published around the anniversary described slower growth rather than the sudden collapse predicted by some opponents or the revival promised by supporters. Allianz Trade estimated that UK GDP would be 2% to 4% higher without Brexit-related political instability and trade friction, while an NBER working paper estimated a 6% to 8% GDP loss, with investment down 12% to 13% and productivity down 3% to 4% against a counterfactual path. Economists and analysts cited lower trade, weaker investment and added barriers with the EU, still the UK’s largest trading partner, as the main sources of damage. The anniversary coincided with another leadership crisis after Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on June 22, setting up Britain for its seventh prime minister since the referendum. EU lawmakers advance digital euro ahead of possible 2029 launch

The European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee approved its negotiating position on a digital euro on June 23, backing the proposal by 43 votes to 14 with one abstention. The digital euro would be an electronic form of central bank money issued and backed by the European Central Bank, distributed through banks or payment providers, and usable for payments in stores, online and between people. Supporters present the project as a way to reduce euro-area reliance on non-European payment networks such as Visa and Mastercard; ECB data cited by Euronews said the two companies process 61% of card payments in the euro area and almost all cross-border card transactions.
