U.S. and Iran exchange strikes after Apache crash near Hormuz

The United States and Iran exchanged strikes after U.S. President Donald Trump accused Tehran of shooting down a U.S. Army AH-64 Apache near the Strait of Hormuz and said Washington “must” respond; the two crew members were rescued and reported uninjured. U.S. Central Command confirmed the crew’s recovery after the crash, while Middle East Monitor reported that CENTCOM continued to describe the cause as under investigation and that Iran had not accepted responsibility for bringing down the helicopter. U.S. Central Command said it carried out “self-defense strikes” against Iranian air-defense, ground-control and surveillance-radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz after the helicopter incident. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps then said it attacked U.S. military targets in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan, including the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, Ali Al Salem airbase in Kuwait and an airbase in Azraq, Jordan. Iranian state-linked accounts described the strikes as retaliation for U.S. attacks on Iranian ports, islands and locations in southern Hormozgan Province. Jordan’s armed forces said they intercepted and shot down five missiles before they reached their target, while Kuwait’s Defense Ministry said it intercepted “hostile aerial targets” early Wednesday.
